The full title clarifies the abstract of this excellent book by Sabine Hossenfelder: “Lost in Math: How Beauty Leads Physics Astray.”
As always, she highlights the enormous problems in the foundations of physics. These are caused, among other things, by aesthetic priorities in building physical models, rather than engaging with observations of Nature.
Carlo Rovelli‘s excellent book demonstrates that, “to understand ourselves, we must reflect on time, and to understand time, we must reflect on ourselves”.
In my personal view, time does not exist in Nature; rather, it is an anthropogenic construct, used to interpret the natural world and to develop our technological systems. Ultimately, it is an indispensable tool, and if, as Rovelli suggests, it helps us reflect on ourselves, then it is doubly so.
The book is very interesting and well-written. Carlo Rovelli recounts the historical importance of a thinker who dared to transcend the limits of primitive interpretations.
