Beyond the fascinating scientific insights, this image is breathtakingly beautiful when one considers what it represents.
Pa 30—the likely remnant of the historic supernova observed in the year 1181—imaged here in unprecedented detail by the Gemini North telescope, one of the two halves of the International Gemini Observatory, which is funded in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by NSF NOIRLab. The image was captured using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) and reveals that the remnant’s distinctive, firework-like ejecta form a cascading structure of knots.
